Notes for John Allen Floyd
Information from John Allen's grandson, Jesse Floyd:
A tall, between 6'1" and 6'4" and slim man with reddish colored hair, broad shoulders, and large hands. He was referred to as "Pop" by thegrandchildren. He lived with my parents at the store my dad ran closeto Drew, MS at Parchment. He also lived with them in Hopkinsville for awhile till about six months before I was born. He died the day after Iwas born. I've been told that one of the last things he said before hedied was "a boy" after they told him that I had been born.
He was a farmer, working as a share-cropper most of his life. He alsoclaimed to be a full blooded Scot-Irishman. This could be true if theinformation I have at the present time turns out to be correct. I askedmy dad if Pop had ever served in the Arny and he said no. He had triedto go in sometime in the 1890s but they told him that he was too young. When World War I started, he felt that the Army had their chance and hewasn't interested in serving then.
He was born in the portion on Clay County, Mississippi that becameWebster County about 1883. According to the 1880 Census, he was thethird child and the second son of William and Martha Floyd.
He spoiled my sister. We have several pictures of Peggy and Pop whilethey were living at the store in Parchment. We also had a pair of hisshoes till after I finished college. I believe they were 11s.
We found the house near Parchment where my folks and Pop lived in June1998. The store was no longer standing, it had been burned and therewasn't much more than an area to turn around where it use to be. Thesurrounding land was being farmed.
Curtis Floyd, Jr. told me in a phone call that "Pop" stayed with hisfamily for a while and that he shared a room with him. He said that"Pop" smoked a pipe and that the room always smelled nice.
