Notes for Curtis Edward Floyd
Information from Jesse Floyd (nephew to Curtis Floyd):
Uncle Curtis was Chief of Police in Drew, Mississippi for about 20years. I saw more of him than any of dad's other brothers. We visitedthen a couple of times in Drew, once in Memphis while he was in thehospital, and they came to see us in Hopkinsville.
Buried at Drew Cemetery, Drew, MS.
On the Board of Aldermen for four years.
Youth Court Counselor until his death
Police Chief in Drew, MS for 22 1/2 years.
August 12, 1923, Baptized at the Drew Baptist Church.
Curtis "arrested" several weapons that he had at his home, including asub-machine gun. He had some guns hidden in secret compartments in acloset. He also had a shotgun that belonged to Pop. It was a Fox12gauge double barrel with large rabbit ears. Dad loved that gun andalways wanted it, but his turn never came. Uncle Ardell blew a hole inone of the barrels. Dad used it when he still lived at home before hismother died.
When Curtis and Bertie came to visit, Curtis brought a neat pistol withhim. A Smith & Wesson 32 frame with a 38 cylinder. We went out to AuntGraces' farm and did some target practice. Hardly any recoil, a greatgun. Dad bought his 38 Special through Uncle Curtis.
He died in October 1976. Mom, dad, and Peggy went to the funeral. Theyleft for Mississippi while I was with the marching band at MiddleTennessee State for a football game. When the buses pulled into theparking lot, campus security met us and one of the graduate assistantsgot on the bus and told me to go with them. They had received a call frommy folks and I was to call them when we arrived so I'd know what theywere doing. Boy, the looks I got when I got in the police car but notnear as many as I did when I got back. I was a freshman and we had beenin school about a month. Makes for a good impression.
