Notes for Sarah Martha E. Coggin
Information from Jesse Floyd in January 2002:

According to the 1880 Mississippi Census for Clay County. She was thirtyyears old at the time the census was taken. This seems to be a year offfrom the information on the tombstone we assumed was hers at Wake ForrestCemetery. The census states that she was born in Mississippi, her fatherin North Carolina and her mother in Georgia.

Martha E. Floyd is listed on her death certificate and the 1880 Censusand she is listed as Sara on the 1900 Soundex. This fits the initialsS.M. on the aforementioned tombstone. The tombstone lists her deathdate as October 10, 1914, but her death certificate contradicts itselfand lists her death as December 15, 1913, in one section and May 1914 inanother. The second section also lists that the doctor started attendingher in December 1913 so I assume that the 1913 date was a mistake. Thecertificate was signed by Dr. T. E. Slaughter of Dancy, Mississippi, onJune 4, 1914. She is said to have died at 11:00 am. Her occupation islisted as housekeeping and she died in Dancy, Webster County,Mississippi. The cause of death is listed as outerstitial nephutin (?),which is the best I can read the doctor's handwriting. It lists WakeForrest Cemetery as her place of burial.

Her father is listed as Burrell Coggins and her mother as MarthaCoggins. It calls for her mother's maiden name and it is listed asCoggins. This may be due to lack of or incorrect information. It alsolists both of her parents as being born in Mississippi which contradictsthe 1880 Census. The information was provided by Nora Duncan of Dancy. Her age at death is given as 65 which does fit with the tombstoneinformation.

Information received from Janey Floyd Thomas supports Martha Coggins asthe wife of William Turner Floyd, although the spelling is Coggans.Information has been received from Sue Greutmann and Kathy Coletti thatconfirms this information.

While researching information on her father, Burrell Coggin, I received alists of tombstones located at the Palestine Cemetery in Montpelier,Mississippi from Ann Schultz which is where Burrell Coggin is buried. There are two young Floyd children were buried there, Martha J.,10-19-1886 - 10-2-1887 and J.T. Floyd, 4-20-1884 - 1887. The dates ofthese children fit in a gap between William and Martha's youngestchildren which makes me wonder if these children were theirs.

Burial: May 1914, Wake Forrest Cemetery, Mantee, Mississippi
