Notes for William Turner Floyd
According to his granddaughter, Willie Beatrice Floyd, he had a bullet inhis leg left over from fighting in the Civil War.
According to information received from his great grandson, Jesse Floyd, the 1880 Clay County, Mississippi Census shows William Turner Floyd as a31-year-old farmer at the time the census was taken which would mean hemight have actually been born in 1847/48 instead of 1846. The censuslists that he was born in Mississippi and that both of his parents wereborn in Georgia.
During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army in Company G, 2ndState Troops, Mississippi Infantry. One record Jesse Floyd receivedfrom the Mississippi Department of History and Archives, stated that heenlisted August 23, 1864 (he would have been 17 years old) and wasdischarged March 15, 1865, while another gives the same enlistment datebut states he deserted September 4, 1864, just a few days after heenlisted. Captain Jessamer (?) was the officer that mustered him in atMacon, Mississippi (?).
According to the 1880 Census information, his oldest child was born about1872/73 and was named Sara. In looking through the 1860 MississippiCensus Records, in Oktibbeha County, Jesse found a Saura Floyd withchildren William, 14, and Martha, 12. According to the record, Saura(which is the way it's spelled) was born in Georgia and both childrenwere born in Mississippi which would connect with the 1880 Censusinformation listed in the Note under William's wife Martha Coggins. At14 years old, this age could fit with William's age on the 1880information. This would also fit due to the fact that families duringthat period would re-use given names from generation to generation. Saracould also be Martha's first name. Jesse also found a William Floyd andfamily on the 1850 Census for Choctaw County. He is 48 and born inGeorgia and his wife is Elenae (?) is 31 and also born in Georgia. Thereis a son William who is three years old that would also fit. Siblingsare John, 12, Rebecca, 10, Elenaer (?), 9, ??? (male), 8, Nancy, 6, and??? (female) 1. All except John were born in Mississippi. These twocould possibly be the same families if the father died, the olderchildren moved away, and the mother's name being misspelled, use ofanother given name, or is a different wife.
He was living with Ed and Myrtis Floyd at the time of his death.According to Leland Floyd, he was buried at the cemetery at Drew,Mississippi, instead of Wake Forrest because his body was in poorcondition and wouldn't make the trip in a wagon over the rough roads backto the hills. If his body had made the trip, it would have been inpieces before the trip was completed. According to Juanita Walker, there was a major feud about where he was to be buried. A grave had beendug for him at Wake Forrest and her grandfather, William Burrell Floyd, had gone to the train station to wait for the train carrying the casketthat never arrived.
Either his or Martha's mother may have been a Mixon.
