Notes for Elizabeth Porter
Elizabeth was a very 'Victorian' person. She had very fewfriends an d was very
particular about keeping up appearances. She was a socialclimber. Sh e did very
little work, making her children keep house. Her son in lawWilliam M erchant
was not allowed in the house, unless he had made a priorappointment . If he
turned up on the doorstep, thats where he stayed.
All meals were eaten with 'full service' on the table.
In her later years, when she was asked to accept 'meals onwheels', s he refused
because one of the servers was beneath her, and she wouldnot allow h er in the
house.

There was no trust of banks, their savings were in a boxunder the be d. In
later years this was depleted rapidly, yet she was tooproud to accep t the
numerous social benefits available to seniors.

Elizabeth expected everyone to wait on her. This, and herVictorian a ttitude,
caused her daughter Doris to leave home at the firstopportunity.
