Notes for William Titt
The date of William's death was provided by R F C Titt
William Titt b. 1744 was a blacksmith by trade and thebuilding wher e he had
his shop is still standing in Chitterne.
William was a yeoman farmer. A yoeman farmer is one whofarms not les s than 100
acres. in 1851 John Titt was farming 120 acres - not all inone piec e but
dotted around the village. Nowadays we drop the yeoman andjust use f armer.

......To my dear wife Susannah Titt all that my cottage ortenemant w ith the
garden hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging,situate an d being at
Chitterne All Saints and now in the occupation of ThomasHaytor...... to hold
the same during the term of her natural life and as long asshe conti nue a
widow in my name. Following her decease or marriage Ibequeath said c ottage etc
to my son John Titt, his Heirs Executors Administrators andAssign fo r all the
estate term and interest which shall be then to cometherein.
Also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Susannah theweekly sum o f four
shillings and also a load of wood yearly....for and duringthe term o f her
natural life as she shall continue my widow and unmarried.
......Also the use and enjoyment of all such of myhousehold goods and
furniture as belonged to her at the time of our marriage:Immediatel y after the
decease or remarriage of my said wife all the saidhousehold goods and
furniture unto my said son John Titt.
I give devise and bequeath unto my son William Titt allthat my lease hold
messuage of Dwelling House, Blacksmith shop, Garden and allother the
hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances theretobelonging s ituate and
being in Chitterne All Saints and now in his own occupation.
.......To my son John Titt.....three leasehold cottages ortenements , barn,
stable, yard, gardens, orchard.... being situate inChitterne All Sai nts and
now in the several occupations of him, my said son JohnTitt, my daug hter
Elizabeth Compton and the turnpike trustees.
...Also to John my two other Leasehold Cottages ortenements, Gardens , orchard
in Chitterne All Saints now in the several occupations ofmyself an d the Parish
officers of Chitterne All Saints.
To my daughter Ann Grant the sum of fifty pounds. To eachof my othe r daughter,
the said Elizabeth Compton, Mary line and Sarah Abery thesum of te n pounds and
to my sons James Titt and Christopher Titt the sum oftwenty Pounds
apiece....payable at the expiration of twelve calendarmonths next af ter the
decease or marriage agin of my said wife..... The saidlegacies or su ms of
money to be considered as vested interest and to betransmissable t o their
representatives (heirs) in the case of the death of any ofthem befor e the
legacies become payable.
Also unto my said son John Titt all the rest and residue ofmy househ old goods
and furniture of every sort and description in trust forhimself an d such other
of my said children to and amongst whom he may think properto distri bute
som.....
And as to all my farming stock and implements of husbandryof every s ort and
description and all the rest and residue and remainder ofmy monies a nd
cecurities for money, goods chattels estate and effectswhatsoever... ....not
herein before by me already otherwise disposed of.......tomy son Joh n Titt

In a business of proving the Last Will and Testament of thesaid Will iam Titt and bringing in and exhibiting anInventory and Account of h is effects.
The Defendant the said John Titt doth exhibit the followingInventor y as a true and perfegt Inventory of all andsingular the Goods Chatt els and Credits of the saidWilliam Titt deceased which have at any t ime since hisdeath come to the hands possession or knowledge of hi m thesaid John Titt and also the valuation of the goods chattelsan d effects as made by William Pearce of Warminster in thesaid Count y of Wilts Appraisor on the thirty first day ofMarch now just past t he amount of which valuation thisExhibitant submits to be charged wi th subject to thepayments made for Funeral Testamtaiy and other Expe nses bythis Exhibitant for or on account of the Estate of the saidd eceased and this Exhibitant further saith that SusannahTitt the wido w of the said Testator is now in thepossession of, and claims to hav e hold possess and enjoythe said Goods Chattels and effects in the s aid Inventorymentioned for and during the term of her natural life , ifshe shall so long continue a widow, under the bequestthereof co ntained in the wioll of the said deceased - Andthis Exhibitant furth er saith that although by Law he hasthe right and power to sell th e said goods and chattelsand effects at once to repay himself the Fu neral andTestamentary expenses incurred by him, as touching the said deceased estate yet from motives of humanity he has notdone so, bu t permitted the widow of the said Testator tohave and enjoy the sai d Goods Chattels and Effects in likemanner as if the said Testator h ad died possessed ofsufficient assets to satisfy such Funeral and Te stamentaryexpenses independent and exclusive of the said goods chattels and effects mentioned in the said InventoryInventory ofValuatio n of the Household Furniture and effects of thelate Mr. William Tit t of the parish of Chitterne AllSaints in the County of Wilts take n for AdministrationMarch 31 st 1831
