Notes for Ann Drenner
Ann was receiving Parish relief (Guardians Minutes) inMarch 1835, th e year
after her husband died.
In June she received an extra 1/6 (one shilling & sixpence) becaus e Mary Ann
fell ill, this was discontinued in September. In Novembeershe was gi ven an
extra 5/- for winter.
1841 Census. Ann widow, age 45 (sic) ag.lab.
Andrew, son, 20, ag. lab.
Isabella, daughter, 14.
Hannah, 10
Mary 8
Ann was renting Fir Tree Cottage in Heddington, from theParish, (Cot tage &
land 20 poles according to tithe map). dated 1841. In 1849the cottag e was sold
and she had to move.
Ann was left a widow with a young family and herself workedon the la nd, yet
Hannah, Andrew and Mary Ann could sign their names. We donot know wh at became
of Elizabeth & Frederick, who seems to have been mainlybrought up b y Ann. They
all received a decent education, although compulsoryeducation did no t arrive
until 1872 and even then had to be paid for.
Ann did very well for her family, under very difficultconditions. Sh e was,
however, lucky to live in Heddington where there was plentyof 'waste ; land
(ref:Vicar) and to have a large garden.
Ann's surname DRENNER seems doubtful, as it is the onlymention of th is name in
the IGI for Scotland. The DRENNANS & BRENNANS seem to havearrived i n Scotland
with the Irish influx in the 19th century. Could her namehave been S TRONACH?
The name was scattered enough for mistakes to occur. (Itmeans 'busyb ody' in
Gaelic!).
