Notes for John Coggin , Dr./, Dr.
He and Frances divorced.
His second wife was Joyce Tye, the widow of Cheney Boyce and Richard Tye.
John was a physician and merchant, dealing tobacco from the New World. It is believed that he made four trips back to England to sell tobacco.John appears to have been of an unusually pugnacious and belligerentnature. According to Charles County Court Minutes of 1665, he suedRobert Simonds for assault whereby his cheekbone was broken and a defectwas occasioned in his eyes. A few days later, Robert Potter stated thathe was present when Coggin and William Wilkins were involved in a disputewhere ill and abusive language was passed and fell to collaring, in WhichCoggin was thrown to the ground with Wilkins upon him. Coggin received ablack eye and a cut lip. A dog of the house seized Wilkins by the legand bit him, whereupon Cogin dressed his wound and gave him medicine tocarry with him.
