Notes for John Baskerville
Record found in the tree of RB Phillips.
I was told many years ago that John was believed to be the son of Sir Walter. John came to Exeter to be an apprentice Tailor to Griffin Amerdydt, he must have been in his teens or early twentys,--also Alexander became a Tailor by gift of the Mayor. This information was given to me from a friend in Devon who also said the information on John came from a small book in the West Country Studies Library in Exeter entitled "Thomas Baskerville, Elizabethan Apothecary of Exeter" it describes how John, father of Thomas, came from Hereford in the early 1500s. Being in New Zealand I can't visit libraries etc.
My son managed to get the Transactions of the Woolhope Naturalists Field Club 43 published in 1979, on pages 18 to 39 is an article by Brian Coplestone-Crow entitled '' The Baskervilles of Herefordshire 1086-1300'', I think the book is held in the Public Library in Hereford, in the article, it describes how Henry the 2nd is reputed to have remarked that "If there were only one Baskerville left in Christendom, that one would suffice to corrupt the whole mass of humanity",---Mind you Henry was not noted for his generosity to people who crossed him, look what happened to Thomas A Becket.
