Notes for Richard Washbourn farmer
The entry of this Richard's birth in the Yatesbury registers is very unusual. No Washbornes were born here before or since this period. Anne Washborn was married here and I think she was the attraction for her brother John to visit the area. Hence the birth of this Richard in Yatesbury.

The Washbornes generally lived around Malmesbury.

1851 census for Caterham, Surrey, shows Richard as a farmer, 74 years old, 2 house servants, Wm Poutin 35 and Elizabeth Batter. Richard was born in Yatesbury. He was farming 85 acres, with 17 servants.

Salmon’s Farm 1841 census

Richard Washbourn (G18) disappeared’ from Yatesbury around 1803 for around 20 years, then turns up in occupation of several large properties in Surrey. These properties were all rented from the Leveson-Gower estate. 'Tillingdown’ near Caterham was of about 600 acres of arable land. Nearby ‘Salmons’, occupied from about 1841,was an 850 acre farm. The farms, of arable land, were by family tradition devoted mostly to wheat; as a result of which the family fortunes were seriously affected by the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846.
