Notes for Walter Frederick George Titt
Walter's son Bob sent in this letter dated Nov 25 1994
" With regards to my grandparents, as I remember they werea little V ictorian
in bringing up my father and his brother, although as theonly grandc hild, you
could say I was a spoiled a little by them. For instance, they took m e to the
cinema every Thursday night, and I always went on holidaywith them , usually to
Blackpool. I suppose these are my favourite memories ofthem as a chi ld. My
grandfather was Chief Clerk of one of the Great WesternRailways depa rtments in
the works at Swindon.
They lived in Swindon most of their lives after theymarried.
My father was an upholsterer in the GWR in Swindon, wherehe learne d his trade,
and shortly after completing their training, they were allsacked.
My father went to Coventry in the motor trade, and workedfor most o f the car
factories in Coventry, but mainly for Daimler. This iswhere he met m y Mother,
who was a Coventry girl.
He returned to the railway in 1928 and we all moved toSwindon in tha t year. He
was out of work again in the 1930's depression for twoyears, and wor ked at a
number of places all over England. My mother and me stayingin Swindo n,
although we did go back to Coventry for a while to mymothers parents . I think
my favourite and proudest memories are those of the waythey manage d during the
1930's depression, hardly any money, but I think togetherthey coul d have taken
on the world - and won!.
As you can gather, I was lucky and had great parents, andalthoug h I was the
only child, they did not spoil me, for which in later lifeI was grat eful.
Considering they had very little money, they gave me a goodeducatio n and I had
a good job, thanks to them."
