In 1566 a Thomas Tytt was a sawyer working on the LongleatEstate. H e was one of several sawyers who cut the treesdown and then cut the m into forms and sizes to suit thepurposes of the carpenter or joine r. The log or baulk oftimer was carefully and firmly fixed over a pi t.
One sawyer stood on the log while the second sawyer, orpitman, stoo d in the pit. Using a vertical saw with boxhandles at both ends th e log was slowly cut along it'slength.
Tradition says that stonemasons came from Scotland to workat Longlea t and that they lived in a row of cottages atnearby Horningsham call ed Little Scotland.
These men were Dissenters, followers of John Knox and JohnCalvin, an d they used to worship in the local woods knownas Penny Woods. Lor d Thynne, the owner of Longleat,allowed them, at his charge to buil d their own Chapel inHorningsham in 1566-7. This Chapel is still i n use todayand some of the old surnames survive in the village. I nthe History of Horningsham Chapel by Albert E.Banton (1952)is ment ioned a list of employees appearing in the LongleatAccounts Book fo r 1566, among them Thomas Tytt.

In 1576 Thomas Tytt was living in Corseley where he paid atything o r tax of 2s 8d on 20s "in annuities". He was nowa Husbandman.
