Notes for Richard Casswell
According to Ken Rogers' notes, Richard was living in Rowde when he was married.
In the WRO Rowde transcripts register, Richard & Ann are recorded as being married on Mar 26 1733.
Perhaps this Richard is the builder of the beautiful thatched cottage known as Caswell's House. His granddaughter Ann married a William Rawlings.
CASWELL'S HOUSE at Cherhill
This house, better known locally as the Shakespearian House, is one of the most picturesque in the village. It was restored in 1939. Mr R Rawlings states that it was built by one of his forefathers -named CASWELL about the year 1770. It is shown on a map of the parish dated 1780,and marked "Caswell's Holding"; evidently it was a small farmhouse and was used as such until well into the nineteenth century when it was converted into two cottages.
