Notes for Frederick Cleverly
Frederick became a gardener. Uncle George New was agardener and prob ably gave
him a start. At Hannington, Frederick may have worked atthe Hall, bu t at
Devizes, Honeystreet ans Pewsey hee worked in smallerhouseholds as
gardener/handyman. (The kennett & Avon Canal seems to havesome relev ence to
these employers). In newport he was employed as HeadGardener t o C H Bailey, JP
at 'Stelvio', 55 Bassaaleg Road. Asthe house is dated 1893,Frederic k was
possibly responsible for creating the gardens, which arenow a housin g estate,
which is built in to the grounds. Some very fine specimentrees and V ictorian
rockery still remain.
George New is a witness at Frederick & Emily's wedding atCalne Paris h Church.
In the Newport directories frederick was noted to havelived at 69 St ow Hill, 1
Bolton Rd & 18 Upton Rd.
